Police are still investigating the cause of the fatal Bay Bridge accident.
A San Francisco man was killed in a fatal motorcycle accident that shut down the Bay Bridge for several hours.
According to police reports, 33-year-old Aaron Peter of Oakland was riding westbound along the right lanes of the upper deck near the bridge's S-curve when he collided with a gray Toyota Avalon. Upon impact, Mr. Peter was thrown from his bike and into the wall and fencing along the bridge's north side. Emergency personnel were called to the accident but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Toyota's driver and a passenger were not injured.
The crash occurred around 10:45 a.m. on Friday morning and the two right westbound lanes of the bridge remained closed for approximately two hours afterward. Police have not yet determined the cause of the fatal motorcycle accident, although it is believed that Mr. Peter was driving well above the posted speed limit at the time the collision occurred.
Had the accident been caused by negligence on the part of the Toyota's driver, he or she would likely face criminal charges in causing the motorcyclist's death. In addition to criminal penalties, California law permits negligent drivers to face civil penalties in the form of a personal injury lawsuit. If a driver causes a fatal accident through reckless or careless behavior, he or she may be subject to a wrongful death claim.
